Addressing Causes for Poverty & Ensuring Food Security for Farming Communities in Sri Lanka
January 1, 2022

Sri Lanka has been able to achieve considerable headway towards reducing poverty. Yet poverty continues to be a considerable problem. Most of the farmers have borrowed money to invest in their farming activities and if their crop fails, they have no way of paying the loans and suicide is the only option.
In order to make quick money and save time, the farmers opt for chemical use in their agricultural activities. As a result of that there is an increase of persons affected by Chronic Kidney Diseases. Malnutrition is common among children in rural regions because of slow moving agricultural growth. There is a substantial lack of infrastructure facilities such as electricity, roads, communication and irrigation facilities which limit opportunities for people to produce more and more to enhance their income.
Unless timely action to prevent these, it will be a great challenge even to obtain the participation of the community members to contribute to the development process of the community and the target areas.
Considering the above factors, the project has been designed to empower the selected communities to consolidate the community structures towards sustainability and safeguard the food security and other components proposed under this program to enable the farmer families to lead a healthy and dignified life by 2022.
