  • Improving Rural Livelihoods, Enhancing Food Security and Building Climate Resilience in Sri Lanka.

In 2022, Sri Lanka experienced the worst economic crisis in its post-independence history, as longstanding structural weaknesses were exacerbated by exogenous shocks and policy mistakes. Poor governance, a restrictive trade regime, weak investment climate and monetary indiscipline contributed to macroeconomic imbalances. The closure of businesses, especially micro, small and medium enterprises, contributed to a contraction in labour force participation. Youth unemployment also increased. Approximately 60 percent of households reported a reduction in income.  Faced with falling incomes, many households have turned to negative coping mechanisms, which have increased food insecurity, malnutrition and stunting.

With the aim of improving rural livelihood, enhancing food security and building climate resilience among the community of Ratnapura diocese, the Food Security project was implemented in Eheliyagoda, Kuruwita, Ruwanwella, Ratnapura & Ayagama Divisional Secretaries to empower the selected communities to consolidate the community structures towards sustainability and safeguard the food security and other components proposed under this programme to enable the farmer families to lead a healthy and dignified life.
